His books include Wyrldmaker [1981], Talking Man [1986], Fire on the Mountain [1988], Voyage to the Red Planet [1990], Pirates of the Universe [1996] and a collection of his short stories, Bears Discover Fire [1993]. Terry is best known for his short stories. Gene Wolfe is science fiction's most respected author. His four volume Book of the New Sun is already a classic. His short fiction has set a higher standard in the fields of SF and fantasy. Nicholas Jainschigg is a delightful artist whose illustrations can sneak up and bite. Nick also does scientific art and museum displays. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Programming ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Disclave will feature a wide range of programming on Science Fiction books, fans, art, media, and science. Not all our events will be traditional panels. For instance, we plan a "Bears Discover Fire" dance Friday night and a Saturday night presentation of an original screenplay, Incident at Oak Ridge, by Terry Bisson. Expect other interesting surprises from Disclave’s writers, editors, fans, and scientists. Programming will start Friday night and continue through Sunday afternoon. We will also feature a series of informal "Kaffeeklatch" meetings with many of our outstanding guests. Program correspondence should be directed to: Sam Lubell 11801 Rockville Pike, Apt 1508 Rockville, MD 20852 lubell@bigfoot.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Art Show ---------------------------------------------------------------------- There is no hanging fee. A 10% commission will be charged on all sales to a maximum of $100.00, 3 bids to voice auction. This year it will have an Editorial page devoted to questions of what you expect from Disclave, What Disclave should expect from you, and what it will take to preserve Disclave for another 50 years. If you'd like to make a point, or share an experience, write a short article to add to this written conversation. Please give us copy in a clear, easily read typeface which can be OCR scanned, on a PC format floppy, or email it. We also plan to set up a PC or two at the con if you want to write an article there. Nothing anonymous will be accepted, but your name can be withheld from publication at your request. With a little luck we'll find a few things we agree on and host a lively discussion about the rest! Photo Project: We are collecting pictures from Disclave for a pictorial history on our club web site. If you have a print, negative, or slide you’ll let us use, bring it along. It will be scanned and returned to you on the spot. If you would like to place an ad in our publications, have material to contribute, or you'd like to help, contact: Evan Phillips 7-A Research Rd. Greenbelt, MD 20770-1776 disclave@worldnet.att.net ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Parties ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bid and other Science Fiction-related parties are welcome at Disclave. Please contact Con Chair Joe Mayhew if you are interested in having a room party. The party rooms will be adjacent to the Con Suite. The drinking age is 21. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- How to DISCLAVE ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Disclave is a many-faceted weekend-long conversation among mature readers (which can include a lot of people who aren’t legally adults yet). We encourage parents to leave children too young to read science fiction at home with grandma. We do not charge a membership fee for children 5 years of age and under, but require that they are always in the company of an adult care-giver. Simulated weapons are not permitted at Disclave and you may not circumvent this policy by carrying the real thing. "Boom Boxes" are unwelcome anti-conversation weapons. Other than seeing-eye dogs, pets are not be permitted in the Disclave hotel. Disclave is staffed entirely by volunteers who work for nothing more than the fun and satisfaction they get by making Disclave happen. You, too can share in the fun and satisfaction by helping out. Helping could be an effort as small as just picking up after yourself and keeping your friends out of trouble as only you can. What you pay to attend Disclave only pays for those things Disclave must buy. We want everyone to have a great weekend with no regrets on Monday. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Memberships ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Memberships cost $20 until December 31, and then $25 until March 30, and finally $30 at the door. GPS or mapping location: N39 1.2’, W76 55.6’. It is really VERY easy to get to the hotel. Just get on the DC beltway and get off at exit 25 on Rt.1 going North. These Instructions are probably too detailed. Note that 95 turns into the eastern DC Beltway and 495 goes around DC on the west. From the North, take 95 South to the Beltway. When 95 forks, take the leftmost lane in the right branch, under the signs for 495/Rt. 1/exit 25. From the West, via 495 follow the signs to Rt. 1 North at exit 25. The lane for Rt. 1 splits off a long ways before you get to the exit, so watch the signs and generally stay right. On the ramp at exit 25 bear left onto the lane which loops under Rt. 1 to Rt. 1 North. Take the first left beyond the traffic light; just past the hotel. Enter the parking lot to your left. From the South or East, take the DC beltway[95] around to exit 25. The hotel will be right in front of you at the top of the ramp, turn right, take the next left, and enter the parking lot to your left. By Air or Train: From National Airport, take the DC metro to the Greenbelt station [on the Green line], the hotel is a short taxi ride from the station, or ask the hotel about their shuttle bus when you arrange for your room. Greenbelt station also serves MARC. At other Airports, take a commercial shuttle. Amtrak’s Union station is a convenient place to switch to a Metro train. Airport Shuttles: Airport Connection 800-284-6066 Super Shuttle 800-258-3826 Aero Shuttle 800-673-0174 All shuttles serve BWI, Super & Aero serve National, but only Aero serves Dulles. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- End ----------------------------------------------------------------------
