DATCLONE!

by Jane Wagner

Kudos to Jack Chalker & Eva Whitley for producing such a relaxing weekend (for everyone but them - I hope they've both recovered). Datclone was a weekend full of what I understand is good old time FANDOM - smoffing, partying, eating, partying, drinking, partying, general fun, partying.... The Asteroids and Space Invaders games in the Game Room got fat on fannish money, and Jack's Atari got a workout (I understand it's planning to go on strike demanding shorter hours). The videotapes and cartoons had enthusiastic audiences (some of them even watched the screen!), the swimming pool was available for use, and the con suite overflowed with munchies, sodas, fans, and bheer. There were several filksings, and in general, a good time was had by all.

Baltimore in 83

There was actually a serious note (E-flat, I think) sounded at Datclone when the Baltimore in 83 bid committee met Saturday night. Mike Walsh reminded everyone of the urgent need to join Denver to vote (preferably by the time ballots come out in mid-July), and said that the Aussies are planning to have 400 supporters at Denver. There was some discussion of fan & pro Guest of Honor qualifications (20 years in the field by 1983 and never been a GOH for pro), and Mike asked that any suggestions be given to him or to a Central Committee (are they as dangerous as they sound) member.

Joe Mayhew auctioned off various & sundry items at the meeting, including a "science fiction western motorcycle quest epic" (Jack Heneghan bought that) and Bob Lovell. Actually, the Moose was not sold into bondage. A ticket for one "Special Moosage" was the cause of spirited bidding - between Mr. Moose and Scott Dennis (for some reason, few fem fans wanted to bid on that in public!). Scott won, and so did Baltimore in 83 - the auction brought in $85.50 for The Cause. Various people contributed money as well, to the tune of $76.80, so the bid committee raised $162.30. Any and all donations are WELCOME - do you know how much it costs to bid on a WorldCon? See Scott Dennis.

It was also revealed during the meeting that on Easter weekend there will be Baltimore in 83 bid parties at five cons on three separate continents - we think that's a record. Lee Smoire is venturing into the lion's den and throwing a Baltimore in 83 party at a con in Australia that weekend; Judy Newton will be hosting a party at Eastercon in England, and parties will also be held at cons in Milwaukee, Los Angeles, and of course at Balticon.

For February, 1982 may I suggest DE UDDER CLAVE? (Milk it for all it's worth, folks.)

See Bev Brandt for Registration, Alexis Gilliland for huckster tables ($25), Bob Oliver for Art Show. The Art Show this year will feature WSFAn artist Sally Bensusen. Artists: there will be no hanging fee, and a 10% commission will be charged. There will be two auctions (tentative times: Saturday 7-9 PM, Sunday 2:00 after the Guest of Honor speech). Many big name fans & pros will be at Disclave this year, but most importantly, we'll all be there. It's Party Time!!!
