At Bloom/Morman House. Attending: Joe Mayhew, Mary Morman, Kent Bloom, Joe Hall, Tom Schaad, Robyn Rissell, Lee Uba, David Busch, Vicki Smith, John Madigan, Tom Hamilin, Keith Marshall, Lance Oszko, Alan Huff, Alexis Gilliland, Charles Gilliland, Bob MacIntosh, Lee Strong, Mike Walsh, Kim Elmore, George Shaner, Walter Miles, Steven Fetheroff, Erica Van Dommelen, Sam Schwartz, Dan Hoey, Philip Raines, Candy Gresham, Abner Mintz, Cat Slusser, Barry & Judy Newton, Mel Scharadin, Steve Smith, Jack Heneghan, Bill Mayhew, Marin Stewart.

Mike Walsh called the meeting to order at 9:14. The minutes of the last 3 meetings were accepted as they appeared in the WSFA JOURNAL. Bob MacIntosh reported that the Treasury stood at $16,078.29

DISCLAVE'87: Bob MacIntosh reported that $4,000.00 has been transferred from the DISCLAVE'87 account to the WSFA Treasury. At least $500.00 more will follow. The Chairman notes that no money was advanced to this year's convention from the club treasury.

DISCLAVE'88: Tom Schaad reported that his Artist GOH will be Jim Burns, this year's Hugo winner.

DISCON III: In order to vote for us, you have to have at least a supporting membership in NOREASCON III, and pay the site selection voting fee. But you DON'T have to join the bid Corporation to work for the bid!

POKER TABLE: Kent and Mary reported that Sears had not as of yet done anything about their order. But as they had found a round card table at a yard sale for small bucks, they felt the matter less urgently. (Whatever would Lee Smoire Say!)

TRUSTEES: Cat Slusser, Stevens Fetheroff and Smith, WSFA's Trustees, reminded us that the election for the 1989 DISCON Chairman is scheduled for the 2nd regular meeting in October. As required, they announced a Trustees' Candidate: Mike Walsh - Other nominations would be acceptable from the floor.

THERE WAS NO OLD OR NEW BUSINESS CONDUCTED.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:26

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

A brief meeting was held after the regular meeting to set WSFA membership dues for the remainder of calendar 1987. Any new member wishing to join WSFA as a voting member, but who did not pay for a membership in DISCLAVE'87, must pay $1.00 for the associate membership fee and $5.00 for the Charter Membership (a total of $6.00). Anyone who has paid the $5.00 voting fee but did not pay for an associate membership (Disclave'87) must pay $1.00 before voting. They will not be Charter (voting) members until they have done so. It was noted that one must qualify as an associate member each year before qualifying for Charter membership. This action was the unanimous decision of the WSFA Executive Board.

Life members are exempted from these requirements.

Guests will see the film "The Day the Earth Stood Still" at 6:00 PM, followed by a reception at the Kennedy Center's Atrium. Ticket prices are $35.00 and include a $10.00 discount on the book. For further information, contact Lori Garver at the National Space Society at (202) 543-1900.

"SPIRIT OF WASHINGTON" CRUISE

Charter or Life members, current in their dues, may participate in the November 8th brunch cruise of "THE SPIRIT OF WASHINGTON". The cruise is to last from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM. Thus it would be wise to BE at Pier 4 (6th and Water Street, Washington, DC) before 12:30. There is a pay parking lot across the street and some limited street-side parking - always a risk in DC. The cost of the brunch is appx. $16.00 (probably plus tax). WSFA has voted to pay all but the $3.00 deposit required from each WSFA member desiring to go. All who want to go must give Doll $3.00 before her deadline (Which might just be the October 16th meeting!). The fare includes the meal, trip but not alcoholic drinks - which will be charged separately. Hampers are not permitted on the boat, neither is it a BYOB party. WSFA will pay all but $3.00 of the fare ONLY for members. Their children and non-member others will be required to pay full fare. If you are very nice to Doll, she may graciously consent to booking them for you with our group. Children under 2 years of age are free. Those 2 and up pay $9.45 (probably plus tax), and must be closely supervised (this is a boat trip, over deep water). Doll reports that as of the last meeting we already have 29 in our party.

Appropriate Bribe: Those wishing Doll to book (at full cost) non-members for this marvelous outing, may employ the following devious bribes, (1) "Please"/"Thank you". (2) Promptness and (3) Cash on the barrel-head.

Those who have signed up, and yea, even PAID, but cannot go, should notify Doll as soon as possible so that WSFA won't have to waste the fare.

LETTER TO ANOTHER EDITOR

Kay Koelsch passed her letter to the Editor of BROWNIAN NOISE for WSFA's comments.

I have noticed a disturbing tendency for the poets in your magazine to mumble to themselves, as it were, and to forget that to be effective, a poem (story, novel, etc.) must communicate.

Unfortunately, this is true of all poetry and of all science friction, so I really shouldn't single out your magazine.

I feel the poet should use simple words at a simple level to evoke a complex, abstract feeling or thought in the reader. But too many poems try to shortcut to the abstract thought by using abstract words and complex images that leave me saying, "Huh? What?"

A fellow member of the Washington Science Fiction Association said he thought a lot of SF fans have trouble communicating thoughts at any level, not just in writing something as precise as poetry. He said too many live in worlds of their own creation, or else turned to science fiction to escape a real world they have trouble communicating with. I don't know how much I believe that, but I believe it enough to support your magazine hoping it can improve communication (and poetry!)

The editor replied:

(Perhaps I'm being insular here, but if this is true of "all poetry" and "all science fiction," there seems to be a paradox. Does "simple" mean "literal"? If so, how would a literal phrase evoke an abstract feeling or thought, unless paired with another literal phrase in an unlikely juxtaposition? Poetry is a medium that communicates differently from prose, in that it compacts the language, leading to metaphors and juxtapositions that could well be called "complex." Any thoughts on this?-EM)

Joe Mayhew comments: Defining Poetry is like herding mice. Something always gets away. Some of the relationship between poetry and prose may be that prose is to walking as poetry is to dance. That's sufficiently vague, I hope. A cynical definition of poetry is: the stuff with the wide margins. S.F. fans who often won't buy a novel unless they get a good deal in terms of pennies per page (thin, highly priced works do poorly) probably feel vaguely cheated by poetry which doesn't have as many words per line as good old prose. Many Tolkien fans tend to skip the "poetry bits", but a few are avid in reciting them at length. In the olden days, people used to get half-tanked on mead or hypocras and listen to the bards go on about how great they, or their leaders, were. A lot of that still goes on.
