John Pomeranz announced a play based on the rise and fall of Discon III, the drama, the laughter, the tears, the heartbreak--in short a literary masterpiece just short of genius--NO, it is in fact TOUCHED with genius--and it will be called "Smoflahoma" and will be presented at Worldcon.

Smoflahoma a HIT!

Your humble secretary saw an audience-invited rehearsal of our John Poreranz's play "Smoflahoma." The truth is, it is spectacular. The cast of characters includes John, Kent Bloom, Erica Van Dommelen, Vicki Smith, Covert Beach, Dan Hoey, Mike Stein, Chris Callahan, Dolly and Alexis Gilliland, Winton Mathews, Tom Schaad, and Bob MacIntosh. I was amazed and impressed with the wonderful voices this group of fen has--they belted out new words to familiar tunes and they were great. The play traces the rise and fall of DisCon III and the fall part is sad. I got tears in my eyes while other audience members were frankly crying. And yet after seeing "Smoflahoma" who can doubt that DC can put on a wonderful con, someday!

It is with a great deal of excitement that I'd like to let all of my friends and associates know that in August, I will begin studying at Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

What? Quitting photography?

Of course not. It would be as easy for me to quit breathing.

The Noreascon 3 Portrait Project which I've been working on for 18 months will be exhibited in Boston over Labor Day Weekend. I've photographed over 150 science fiction and fantasy authors, artists, editors and publishers for it so far. The exhibit will continue to grow and will be hung in Holland next August.

Besides, photography pays better than waiting tables, and I will be working my way through law school. I will continue to welcome assignments, although from September through May I will be limited to those in the general vicinity of Cleveland, Ohio.

Attending law school is not a total departure for me. I intended to do so when I went off to college, but I discovered other possibilities. It took my experiences as ASMP Rights Committee Chair to realize that there was work I wanted to do which would be easier if I had the credentials. Thanks to the moral support of a couple of really good friends, a terrific essay I wrote on "work for hire" and the significance of the CCNV v. Reid case, and a grant from the AAUW, it is going to happen. I expect to specialize in intellectual property and arts-related law, preferring the company of creators, even if the other side can pay better.

So, as of August 1, 1989, and probably for the next three years, all my worldly goods will be at:
